Getting BETTER Returns
for our scholarship funds

Ted de Ponti (above), President of RCSW in 1964 / 65, willed a sum of S$250,000 in 1990 to RCSW to establish a scholarship fund for tertiary students from the National University of Singapore, the Singapore Polytechnic and the Nanyang Technological University.

This sum of money was originally invested in fixed deposits which yield returns of 0.5% to 0.75%. Some felt that these returns would not provide meaningful study grants to our needy or worthy students. Following deliberation at committee, BOD meetings and with consensus from our last club assembly, members felt that we should look into a safe investment vehicle offering higher returns. Our Honorary Treasurer Yeo Chuen Eng has kindly agreed to spearhead this project, make the necessary inquiries and to initiate the process.

UPDATE:
After our failed attempt to open a Central Depository Account at the CDP, a requirement by DBS Bank before they would purchase the proposed bond for our Ted de Ponti Fund, Treasurer Yeo Chuen Eng sought Citibank's help to secure the bond without the CDP account. Citibank agreed to do so on the following conditions :

1. We provide an extract of our Board's minutes authorizing the purchase of the Bonds.
2. We provide an extract of the Club Assembly meeting where members have been informed of the Board's decision and that there was no objection to the proposed investment.
3. We undertake to amend our constitution (later) to provide for SGD Bond investments.

Our plan is to invest in "AA" or "A" rated Bank Bonds like OCBC or UOB and/or Singapore Government Statutory Board Companies' Bonds like LTA. They are for tenures of between 8 to 12 years. The eventual selection of the Bond will depend on their availability but we should get at least a 4% pa return. These bonds are considered very safe investments.

We will keep members posted about the progress via bulletin and at our subsequent club assemblies. A business meeting will also be convened sometime in January 2004 to amend our club's constitution to include bond investments by the club.

Major Project gets a Kick Start
from funds raised through our charity bike rider Rtn Pieter Van Putten
and from funds raised through NJC's Christmas Cheer project

A gathering of friends and Rotarians to celebrate Pieter's 40th Birthday on Saturday 29th November saw NO birthday presents, but donations of cheques and cash instead to the Singapore Cancer Society, a charity nominated by RCSW as part of its major project 03/04. This gathering raised a total of S$2,660. Pieter will also champion the cause by riding from Malacca and arriving in Singapore in time for our major project charity golf dinner at Raffles Country Club on Friday, 23rd April 2004.  Happy 40th Birthday Pieter and thank you for the party. We would also like to thank generous guests who attended and made a contribution to this worthy cause.

The Interact Club of NJC has started their Christmas Cheer project. They have been selling "The Christmas CD - All Wrapped Up"  by the a cappella group Vocaluptuous, teddy bears and chocolates at Suntec City from 1st to 23rd December. They can be located at the walkway outside the food court next to the the Fountain of Wealth. Proceeds from the sale of the CDs will go to The Society of the Physically Disabled. Proceeds from the sale of chocolates and teddy bears will support NJC's community service trips to Cambodia and the Maldives. (Picture above: NJC Interactors at Suntec City)

Any member in the vicinity are encouraged to visit, support or bring a friend
at lunch (after 11am) or before 7pm in the evening.

A LETTER FROM AG CHRIS CHEN

Dear Presidents and Rotarians of Group 5, District 3310,

I am writing to appeal as well as to encourage you, your club officers and members to register for the upcoming District Conference that will take place in less than a month.

This conference promises to be interesting not only for us Rotarians but also for our spouses. The programme will feature PRIP Bhichai as one of our keynote speakers amogst others. You will find him motivational, insightful and inspirational. He was also a Past District Governor of our District 3310.

I strongly urge all Rotarians, in spite of your busy schedule, to take time off to come attend this conference by registering now. We need your support! This will also help us with our catering, transport and other arrangements.

I would also like to thank RC Bugis Junction whom I understand has already lined up a strong delegation. If your club or fellow members have not done so, I urge you to do so as soon as possible.

Thank you & regards,

Chris Chen
