PRESIDENT'S MID-TERM
ADDRESS / APPRECIATION
on the 8th January  2004
A SUMMARY

"IF THERE IS ANYTHING WORTHY
AND OF GOOD REPORT
... THINK OF THESE THINGS"

Before RY 03/04 began, regional economies were hit by the dreaded "SARS", RCSW was not spared and we saw the deferred visit of 3 of our sister clubs. Fortunately under the chairmanship of VP PP Wee Leong How, we still had a good turn out at the 03 / 04 installation dinner.

MAJOR PROJECT: At the President's fellowship on September 1st, the Christmas CD "All Wrapped Up" by the a cappella group "Vocaluptuous" was 'soft launched' in aid of the Society for the Physically Disabled to purchase a wheelchair people mover. To date, the whole project sold 6,000 plus CDs with RCSW responsible for 2,200. This surpasses the original target of 5,000 CDs. The final tally of sales figures and amount raised is currently being done. A further report will be given shortly.

NEW MEMBERS: RCSW was infused with 3 new spirited Rotarians and I am deeply grateful to PP's Peter Kong, BG and Rtn Michael Quek.

ROTARY FOUNDATION: In October 2003, the RCSW Foundation was dissolved by members as it was not serving it's intended purpose and costing us accounting fees.

BULLETIN: The RCSW bulletin "West News" was given a facelift with a more user and reader friendly approach. Except for festive holidays, it is brought to you on a weekly basis. Our RCSW website is also continually updated by our editorial committee.

FAMILY OF ROTARY: In keeping with Rotary's aim of encouraging the "Family Spirit", we re-emphasized the involvement of the family in certain related community and fellowship projects like Food-Aid to RFSC and the upcoming RCSW Culinary Challenge. My appreciation to VP Ronnie for coordinating this event. VP Ronnie is also the Rotarian Advisor to the NJC Interact Club and was instrumental in guiding them with their Christmas cart at Suntec City. In the same vein, Rotarian Advisor Lai Bou Leong guided Jurong Institute in the cart (located at Paragon Shopping Centre) that RCSW arranged for them during the Christmas period to raise funds for the School Pocket Money Fund. Thank you, Bou Leong !!

ZONE  INSTITUTE: RCSW played host to delegates of the Zone Institute. My thanks to PDG Ben Chng for kindly hosting the fellowship dinner. Special mention to Secretary Jeff Koh for volunteering as editor and producing a daily newsletter during the 3 day Zone Institute Meeting.

"BROTHER-CLUB" VISIT: In December, we visited our then "Sister-Club" Cebu-West  to view the PCs that we had sent and to renew ties temporarily disrupted by SARS!  Thanks to PP Peter and Dir Gary for making up our delegation. My thanks also to Rtn Bernard Chia, PP Kay Eng and Rtn Kiah Tow for representing RCSW at our sister-club - RC Pudu's "Fragrance of the Night" charity dinner in December.

VOCATIONAL VISITS: These visits were organized for our Interactors to gain a career insight into the hospitality (New Otani Hotel c/o of Director Yoshi) and the banking industry (AMEX c/o Treasurer Yeo Chuen Eng).

We still have an exciting programme (see below) lined up for the next half of the year. I thank you for your continued support this past half year and look forward to your fellowship in the next. In the mean time let us all continue "to lend a hand" in these trying times in the name of service.

FOOD AID 10th JAN 2004: RCSW sole supporter for last 3 years

3 Rotarians and their wives participated in this latest food aid exercise on 10th January 2004 at the Rotary Family Service Centre. They were Rtns and Spouse: Ronnie & Vivien, Nelson & Lisa and Sin Yong & Lai Peng. RCSW has been the sole supporter of this Food Aid exercise at the RFSC for the last 3 years.

Ration Source and Budget
These products are purchased from a nearby Muslim provision shop. The owner considers this his community obligation and sells this to RFSC at a total cost price of about S$32. RCSW is indeed grateful. The total budget of S$200 - S$300 per month comes from our sunshine box and benefits approximately 12 families. At the request of the RFSC, we have agreed to increase the budget to $35 per family. Each beneficiary is on the Food Ration scheme for a period of 2-4 months only. Meanwhile RFSC will be helping them in other areas such as job placements, interviews, children's schooling and getting other aid from other government and non-government organizations. Please continue to contribute to Sunshine generously so that our Club can continue to help.
