"Peace
Forum kicks off at
World Understanding
and Peace Day"
Centennial Bell
comes
to Singapore
**
Rotary on
its way to 100 this 2005 ** |
 |
|
|
The founding of
Rotary, on 23rd February 1905 is traditionally celebrated as World
Understanding and Peace Day. This year, a new and profound meaning
to this celebration was added to the Rotary community in Singapore
in terms of a "Peace Forum" successfully organized by all Rotary
Clubs in Singapore. With an illustrious panel consisting of:
|
Dr Syed Farid
Alatas (Sociologist) |
|
Pres Dr Ang
Peng Chye (Consultant Psychiatrist / Psychologist) |
|
IPP Claire
Chiang (Businesswoman/Politician) |
|
Mr Phillip
Overmyer (Int'l Chamber of Commerce Director) |
|
Mr Aaron Himes
(Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar) |
|
Venerable Ming
Yi, religious leader from Ren Ci Hospital and Medical Care
Centre. |
|
Rotarian Dr
Philbert Chin, Rotarian Perlita Tiro |
The forum discussed
the state of unrest in the world today, its implications for
business and social life generally, and how we could possibly
initiate projects and programmes that would bring about greater
peace and harmony.
There was an overwhelming agreement that the process starts with
education, promoting inter-cultural and racial peace and harmony at
a young age. The importance of peace with individuals, families,
organizations and the community, before international peace could be
achieved could not be emphasized further. The proper mindset on an
individual level was crucial for harmony to prevail across
cultures.
|
"In the
aftermath of September 11th, world understanding and peace day
must necessarily be the focus of enhanced attention by, not
just politicians and statesmen but Rotarians as well. Despite
phenomenal progress in science and technology, apparently the
human race still consistently engages in conflict at all
levels of society. Must this be so? Need it be so?
Certainly not! In many parts of the world, in certain
communities, in certain homes, there are examples of those who
have lived in peace and harmony. So where do we begin to find
lasting answers? As Rotarians it behooves us to ponder these
issues and lend a hand in playing a part, however small, in
moving society to a more civilized state"

At lunch, our Guest of
Honour and speaker
HE Andreas Michaelis,
the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany
delivered his address on the same theme.
The
celebration of the "Centennial Bell" passing through this
part of the world was marked with all the Presidents of
the Rotary Clubs in Singapore, led by our DG David Tong,
each ceremonially striking the bell - marking its journey
through Singapore. The bell arrived from Bali where it was
collected by President CK Ang from RC Singapore.
After Singapore, the Centennial Bell headed towards Brunei
for its next leg of the journey before reaching its
eventual destination in Chicago in 2005, the birthplace of
Rotary. The bell was ceremonially handed over to
representatives from the Rotary Club of Brunei
(picture above right)
by DG David Tong and President CK Ang.

Families benefit from Food
Aid |
|
|
RCSW
was "hands on" again on 21st February 2004 with our commitment to
provide food-aid to needy families approaching the Rotary Family
Service Centre. The exercise this time was a "family of Rotary'
affair indeed with Rtn
Michael Ibach and his
2 sons Vincent
and Tizian
present at the RFSC Food-Aid Distribution. While Rtn Michael was
involved with the adult beneficiaries, his sons were helping for a
short while at the children's Library and Reading Room. Following
the exercise and an overall good experience of service to the
community, the food-aid team enjoyed fellowship over prawn noodles
at Beach Rd.
In case some of you do not know, Rtn Michael is an accomplished
singer and has performed at the Esplanade. He is also an
accomplished trumpeter and flutist. Talk about hidden talents and
knowing your fellow Rotarian !
