"Celebrate Rotary"
**
Rotary's
theme on its centennial this 2005 ** |
|
RI
President-elect Glenn Estess Sr.
(picture left) unveiled the 2004-05
theme "Celebrate
Rotary"
(below right)
at the International Assembly in Anaheim, California, USA, on 16th
February. He explained to 529 incoming district governors gathered
at this important training meeting that the new theme was inspired
by the desire to celebrate in the centennial year the ideals that
Rotary's founders stood for and that over the years have influenced
generations of Rotarians to do good throughout the world.
"We are now
approaching the 100th anniversary of their action - a simple meeting
between
four businessmen," the RI President-elect remarked in the 20-minute
address announcing the centennial year theme and programme. "And
when we celebrate all of the wonderful things that have happened as
a result of that action, I will be asking all Rotarians to join me
as we embrace our theme in 2004-05 and Celebrate Rotary."
In the address, President-elect Estess outlined the 2004-05
presidential emphasis: water management, health concerns, literacy,
and the family of Rotary. The emphasis addressed major social or
development issues facing billions of people on earth.
|
|
He also announced three
major goals for the coming year: moving forward on PolioPlus;
significantly increasing membership; and reaching US$100 or
more per Rotarian in giving - Every Rotarian, Every Year - to
the Annual Programmes Fund of the Rotary Foundation.
"I am asking each of you
to be an instrument for peace and take the Every Rotarian,
Every Year message to your heart and to your Rotary clubs,"
said the President-elect. "Every Rotarian, Every Year is based
on the idea of taking a positive action."
All the three goals will be enhanced by the publicity and
excitement generated by the centennial activities, especially
twin clubs and centennial projects carried out by Rotary
clubs, he said.
Later in the day, RI President Jonathan Majiyagbe elaborated
on the 2004-05 presidential emphasis by enumerating some of
the related initiatives that Rotarians can adopt to celebrate
100 years of outstanding service.
"Our first hundred years will stand as an inspiring record of
men and women of all races, religions, nationalities and
political creeds who have made significant contributions to
creating a more peaceful world," he said. "It will be your
privilege to lead Rotarians into our next century - a century
in which we will Lend a Hand and Celebrate Rotary
with even greater fellowship and countless acts of service." |

HIGHLIGHTS |

RCSW, RC Dhonburi-Thailand
and RC Izu Chuo-Japan
present Educational VCDs and Players to Chiangrai. |
|
|
 |
The RCSW
delegation, represented by Director Gary Loh, President Tay Wei
Lien and PP Peter Kong.
(1st picture left),
together with their Japanese counterpart RC Izu Chuo was warmly
greeted on arrival in Bangkok on 19th Feb 2004 by our gracious
host RC Dhonburi. At a simple ceremony, our contribution of Thai
Bhat 100,000 was presented to the coordinating Club, RC Dhonburi
in aid of the Educational VCD Project.
The next
morning, the delegation consisting of 12 RC Dhonburi, 3 RCSW & 1
guest and 3 RC Izu Chuo members headed towards the mountains of
Chiangrai. The first presentation of the VCDs took place almost
immediately on arrival at the Chiangrai YMCA Retreat Centre for
schools. After a 2.5 hour mountain trip, the 2nd presentation
was made to an Arka Hill Tribe village school near the Myanmar
border. (2nd, 3rd &
5th pictures left)
" It was indeed an
enriching experience observing the children at lessons and
chatting with the teachers after. We were deeply privileged to
participate in their dismissal assembly, as it was a Friday,
with each President having the opportunity to say a "few words"
(4th picture
left). It was a
2 day walk home for some of the kids following dismissal"
(Pres Tay)
The final presentation took place at their hotel the following
evening before departing to Bangkok the next morning.
RC Chiangrai-Nburi was also indeed a gracious host. One of the
highlights of the dinner was "bamboo-worms" fried to a crisp
.... which President Tay claimed to be quite tasty with single-maly
whiskey & soda. The delegation also acquitted themselves well at
the Karaoke session that followed (besides finishing off all the
whiskey). Other fellowship highlights included: a
"close-your-eyes-just-enjoy traditional Thai noodle lunch
affair", a visit to the golden triangle and not to mention a
round of golf.
Other events, not involving RCSW directly but present for
support, included the presentation of 900 bicycles by Rotary
Clubs from Japan to the Rotary Clubs in the Chiangmai -
Chiangrai area. This was coordinated by the only Japanese
speaking club in Bangkok. RC Dhonburi will take over this
coordination next year, hence their involvement. |
