Fireside Chat with Catherine Lim

24th May 2006

Hot on the heels of the last election, I'm sure we will all like to know Catherine Lim's take of the event and diagnosis of the state of the country.  She has been known not to mince her words...

BTW also the topic should appeal to all interested Singaporeans and also Upper sec/JC students.  So all Rotarians can make it a family event.

Dear fellow Rotarians,

Please join us this Thursday for a presentation on

Perils, Promises, Paradoxes: How Catherine Lim sees her role as social critic

Ms Catherine Lim, Author

About the Speaker:

Our speaker is a well known author in Singapore.  She has written books and short stories and her literary work is used in the Singapore school system for literature.

As a social critic, her commentary article in the Straits Times was subjected to intense debate and scrutiny by none other than the then Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong.  This led to the creation of political of the famousOB Markers for non-political social commentators and the challenge for those who wish to venture into political debate to enter politics rather than comment on the sidelines (perhaps the recent excitement in the elections where the voters were given a wider choice of capable candidates than before could be the result of this debate?).

On behalf of the programme committee, we look forward to seeing you this Thursday.

Yours in Rotary

Michael Chua
Programme Service Director
