Report on “Operation Smile” Handover

Wei Lien and I went to the Philippines to witness the Operation Smile project for which RCSW had raised 5 matching grant PHFs during the 2005-06 year. Together with representatives of our sister club, RC Makati West, we travelled to Cabanatuan City (4 hours away from Manila) where during last week a total of 107 children with cleft lips and cleft palates were operated. We witnessed some of the operations, met with some of the children and their parents before/after the operations, toured the hospital (somewhat basic) facilities and had fellowship with the medical team carrying out the operations as well as representatives of the 3 local Rotary clubs in Cabanatuan city who supported the projected with much hands on efforts.  We are happy to report that our donations – together with those from RC Makati West and the top-up from Rotary International – have gone a long way to dramatically improve the lives of 107 children.

After our return to Manila the undersigned participated in a charity cycling event, together with 3 members of RC Makati West. We cycled 130km in the Philippine heat to raise funds for another cleft lip project organized by a Philippine senator.
