Saudi Arabia

The strength of Rotary is derived from the diversity and range of its members.  This week, we have yet another in-house presentation from our club member on the little known topic of Saudi Arabia .  Given the intensity of the visits by our leadership to the Middle East in the last few months, it is indeed timely for us to hear from someone who has spent a considerable duration in the country.

It is also the time of the year that we need to muster our resources to support the club’s own major project golf game.  The participation form is attached.  Do see how you can contribute to the success of this event.

This Thursday.....

At your Lunch Meeting this Thursday 12:45pm, 1st February 2007,

The Pines, 30 Stevens Road, Singapore 257840

Dear fellow Rotarians,

Please join us this Thursday for a presentation by

"Life, Breathe and Eat Saudi - Lessons learnt from 18 months of working in Saudi Arabia."

Rtn Tan Keng Hee, Crisonlogic Pte Ltd

Our speaker is newly returned member, Rtn Tan Keng Hee.  Keng Hee has some 16 years of IT experience.  He is a globally certified Project Management Professional and a certified SAP consultant and has worked for MNCs like IBM, Andersen Consulting and KMPG/BearingPoint.  He is currently working for CrimsonLogic Pte Ltd.  In 2005, he was posted to Saudi Arabia on an eGovernment project and stayed there for one and a half years.  During the posting, he experienced working in an Islam centric country and what it means to be posted to the Middle East.

“In most people's mind, Dubai represents the Middle East, just like Singapore represents ASEAN.  Yet Dubai is a small dot much like Singapore.  The City of Riyadh in Saudi Arabia is twice the size of Singapore.  Size and wealth wise, Saudi Arabia is the biggest country in the Middle East where policies change rapidly over the years.   Saudi Arabia is like China in the 70s before it opened up to the outside world.   Early movers will have an advantage but there will be a need to know how to operate within the present context.

In this talk, I will aim to share what life is really like and what considerations must be taken to operate within Saudi Arabia.   No one can truly understand a culture within 18 months and I do not claim to be one.   However, I can definitely share some frank personal perspectives that is a bit sensitive given that Singapore is in the midst of countries of islamic faiths.  Hopefully the powerpoint presentation with a slideshow will give a deeper understanding on the pre-requsities needed to succeed in this important region of the next decade.” – Keng Hee

On behalf of the programme committee, we look forward to seeing you this Thursday.

Yours in Rotary

2. Feb 23 2007World Understanding and Peace Day

All Rotary Clubs in Spore have come together to organise a "World Understanding and Peace Day" dinner on Feb 23, 07 (Friday) at the Merchant Court Hotel.

As management council member at the Rotary Family Service Center representing RC Spore-West, I have agreed to organise a table or two for members from our club to join the celebration.

I therefore look forward to have you guys enjoy an evening of fellowship to catch up and chill out....  Besides, it is always good occasionally we come together to carry the Spore-West Flag i.e. when we are in town or when we have the time...

Please let me know your interest. It would cost $60 (per pax) and I shall bring at least two bottles of good wine to share...Email your confirmation to me.

Thanks!
