Dear fellow Rotarians,

Please join us this Thursday for a presentation by

"Wired for learning, Wired for Life"

Dr Doris Ang, Clinical Director, Irlen Dyslexic Clinic

Our speaker, Dr. Doris Ang is Clinical Director of Irlen Dyslexic Clinic; a multidiciplinary clinic for the evaluation and treatment of learning difficulties.  Dr. Ang's interest and concern for students who were underachieving and experiencing reading difficulties led to her PhD research.  Dr. Ang was clinically trained in Australia and she has extensive experience working with youth in schools as well as prison ministry.  She also serves as consultant to Barister Express, a Mental Health cafe funded by MCYS, Loving Care Support Group in Melbourne – a reach out program to the chinese community.

The synopsis of her talk is as follows:

“The brain is involved in everything we do and therefore must be considered in relation to motivation and reason for a person's behavior. The hard wiring in our brain construct our perception, feeling and behavior.  Brain imaging has allowed scientists to observe metabolic activity within specific regions of the brain during activities.  The brain is an electrochemical organ, its activity is controlled by currents and chemicals.  Human brains are at their most plastic during infancy. You can take away an entire hemisphere from a child's brain and the other will rewire itself. Learning is defined as the establishment of new neural network forming pattern of connectivity.  Let's find out whether we can modify the pattern of connectivity in a child's brain to enhance learning.  Is your child's learning affected by certain environmental stressors?  Can we enhance the functioning brain, or rewire for them to see and experience an entirely different world.”

On behalf of the programme committee, we look forward to seeing you this Thursday.

Yours in Rotary

What’s coming up:

1. Feb 23 2007World Understanding and Peace Day

All Rotary Clubs in Spore have come together to organise a "World Understanding and Peace Day" dinner on Feb 23, 07 (Friday) at the Merchant Court Hotel.

As management council member at the Rotary Family Service Center representing RC Spore-West, I have agreed to organise a table or two for members from our club to join the celebration.

I therefore look forward to have you guys enjoy an evening of fellowship to catch up and chill out....  Besides, it is always good occasionally we come together to carry the Spore-West Flag i.e. when we are in town or when we have the time...

Please let me know your interest. It would cost $60 (per pax) and I shall bring at least two bottles of good wine to share...Email your confirmation to me.

Thanks!
